Founded in 1997
Heritage Musical Spoons is owned and operated by Richard and Mathieu, a father and son team from Quebec City, Canada. Richard, who has had a lifelong love of woodworking, crafted his first set of spoons in 1997 to help a friend who was looking for a unique gift for his tourist clients. Word got around about the feel and quality of the spoons, and Richard soon got requests to make more. When they are not crafting or marketing their spoons, Richard and Mathieu both enjoy spending time outdoors. Richard is passionate about kite-surfing, and in the winter, he hits the backcountry on his skis. Mathieu enjoys travel and trail running.
About Richard
Formerly an environmental technician, Richard liked the idea of owning his own small business and decided to devote himself to his handcrafted spoons full time. He is also an avid Kitsurfer, on a windy day you will find him surfing on St-Laurent River.
About Mathieu
After growing up working in his dad’s woodworking shop, Mathieu earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Sherbrooke University and worked in marketing for leading companies like L’Oréal and Air Canada. However, in 2016, he decided to join his father in the family business and has never looked back.
What Makes Our Spoons Special?
We work exclusively with Canadian Maple Wood from the forests of northern Quebec and Ontario. Maple is a high-density wood that is perfect for percussion. Unlike metal spoons, our wood spoons produce a rich, full sound. Also, our spoons, which have designs inspired by traditional attached French musical spoons, are easier to play than unattached metal spoons. With a focus on craftsmanship, sound, and quality, we create all our spoons in our Heritage Workshop -- which Richard also built with his own hands.
